The ability to create prototypes and replacement parts at the point of use without the waste of traditional (subtractive) manufacturing is nothing short of revolutionary. Also the precision of todays 3D printers allows for geometries and tolerances difficult to impossible to make with current manufacturing techniques. One example of the geometries enabled by 3D printing are thin-walled hollow structures (e.g. small containers), historically difficult to manufacture with traditional methods. Researchers at the University of Southern California (USC) are investigating how parts created through additive manufacturing can use origami-inspired folding techniques to create these thin-walled structures.How did you initially get into your very intriguing research concerning additive manufacturing with thin shell structures? How did the inspiration from origami come about? In our research group, we worked on improving building speed of additive manufacturing for several years. We developed various approaches and Origami was one of the topics identified by NSF solicited proposals in 2012. We began to investigate the origami idea to improve the building speed of additive manufacturing.Your research presented experimental results from a wide set of test conditions, including several assembly tests. What were some challenges you experienced? The test cases were d esigned to demonstrate the capability of the developed method. How to fold the designed sheet accurately is one of challenges we experienced. In addition, we are actively looking for applications that may benefit from our approach.What work remains before you complete this RD program? After submitting the paper, we continued working on the actuation of the folding actions. We will publish some following papers based on our future investigation.What other applications of additive manufacturing interest you? I am interested in novel applications of additive manufacturing such as dental, aerospace, and robotics.What other research projects unrelated to additive manufacturing are you currently engaging in, or if this is your focus, what is your next project? Additive manufacturing is currently the focus of our research group. There are many problems to be addressed for this type of manufacturing processes to be more widely used. We are working on many issues including developing funct ional materials, design for additive manufacturing, smooth surface fabrication, quality control, etc.When did you first realize you wanted to become an engineer, not just an engineer but a researcher, one that looks for solutions to the tough questions? But some scammers will proactively reach out to unsuspecting job seekers by email. Here are some ways to identify potential recruiting email scams. Pay attention to the sender Beware of emails that come from free or unfamiliar domains. Free domains include yahoo.com, hotmail.com, gmail.com, etc. The domain should match the name of the company where you applied. (The only exception to this rule is for small businesses, which may not have their own domain.) Beware of unsolicited email. If you receive an email from a job that you didn’t apply for, it’s probably a scam. Do not engage with suspected spam emails Do not offer your personal information or money to anyone who emails you. To apply for a job, you should not need to supply your birthday, social security number, bank account number, credit card numbers or other personal details. Resist the temptation to reply to a suspected scam email or offer your phone number by calling- scammers will sell your phone number or email address to companies who will send you spam email and spam call you. Any email about a specific job opportunity with a company that is not Simply Hired that claims to be from Simply Hired is not legitimate. This unsolicited email was forwarded to us by a job seeker who didn’t apply to any jobs with the company. As soon as we found out about the problem, we were able to take measures to stop the scam and warn people about this fraudulent email. Economists often describe the dislocation and unemployment caused by new technologies creative destruction. The process of technology destroying jobs is not a new concern. Nor is it a process without plenty of pain and suffering for those workers who dont have the skills to succeed in todays competitive job market. Studies based on previous periods of creative destruction show that this current low point will likely give way to growth in new industries based on new technologies. However, in the process, automation is continuously removing low skilled jobs which may never be replaced. Factory floor automation has removed many of the quality manufacturing jobs that formed the backbone of the middle class. Now information technology is taking over the functions of many service sector jobs from touch screen order systems in restaurants to high-end decision support tools for healthcare workers. The health of the economy depends on the ability of workers to retrain and for highly skilled entrepreneurs to create new opportunities for them. Jobs in growing areas such as science, engineering and management rely heavily on the continuous improvement of skills and high levels of creativity. They are supported by policies that value entrepreneurship, protect intellectual property, reduce burdensome regulation and provide superb educational opportunities for students and existing workers. Over the next decade, creativity will be the fuel that drives economic growth. Computers and advanced robotics will continue to take over tasks that are too time-consuming, too tedious, or too complex or laborious for human endeavors in both the manufacturing and service sectors. However, the skills that drive creativity (imagination, innovation and interaction), and provide a competitive advantage in a highly competitive global market, may never be fully replicated in machines. Those nations, communities and companies that value imagination, innovation and interaction will have the capacity to adapt and thrive in an automated world. Imagination: Imagination is the ability to create new ideas, products and solve problems through the power of insight. Innovation: Innovation is the iterative process of creating more effective products, processes and technologies. Interaction: Interaction is a vital part of society and drives creativity through the cross fertilization of ideas and experience. These three skills are highly interdependent on one another. Jonah Lehrer in his book Imagine provides numerous examples of breakthroughs created through an imaginative insight that is refined through a constant process of iteration that uses both sides of the brain. This process is heightened by the sharing of new ideas and experiences. It is for this reason that companies as different as 3M and Google regularly rotate scientists and engineers across divisions. Mechanical engineers and engineering companies that are able to harness the power of imagination, innovation and interaction will be in demand regardless of the development of new technology. Narrowly defined technical skills may become obsolete due to the development of new technology, but the ability to imagine and innovate will always remain in demand. By the same token, the ability of engineers to interact in diverse human networks will become more important as the scope and complexity of engineering projects increase. Implications for ASME Many of the current examples that demonstrate the power of creativity arise from the melding of engineering with other fields of study, such as the biological sciences. ASME can play a vital role by monitoring this growing area of research and sharing the findings with their members and partners. ASME can also work as an intermediary that facilitates interaction inside and outside the field of mechanical engineering. The first step may be bringing together experts from outside the engineering field with mechanical engineers to discuss imagination, innovation and interaction. ASME could also work with its partners to encourage and develop curriculum for engineers that advance these skills.

Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) offers opportunities for undergraduate or graduate business and accounting majors who are looking to gain experience in the field of finance in a nonprofit organization. For finance work, focus on internships in CDFs core area of Non-Profit Management, which includes the executive office and finance. Interns may assist in the preparation of 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) state registration filing requirements; as well as provide supporting data for financial reports, bank and account reconciliations, tracking of travel expense accounts, as well as other varied administrative duties. The Financial Services Forum  is a financial and economic policy organization that includes the chief executive officers of 20 of the largest and most diversified financial institutions operating in the United States. In 2019, the organization is offering interns a part-time, 10-week internship in international cybersecurity for the financial services sector.Intel Corporation  offers both student and graduate internships in finance. The company also has a Finance Summer Intern Program that offers a twelve-week assignment that links students with a professional mentor and a peer buddy. But, for fashion models and the agencies that represent them, it has never been about weight, it s a models measurements or stats that matter most.   If you are already represented by an agency, the agents there will make sure the stats on your promotional material are accurate. But, if you are just starting out and are looking for a modeling agency to represent you, it is essential that the stats you give to prospective agencies are accurate. Why You Need Accurate Measurements It’s not uncommon for new models to feel uncomfortable or even self-conscious when taking their measurements. But, as tempting as it is to forgo the process altogether, you should never neglect to include your stats when submitting your photos to agencies or scouts. Top international modeling agencies and scouts view thousands of photos every day and they are looking for complete submissions. Plus, they don’t have the time to chase down models for additional information. If you guesstimate your measurements or don’t measure correctly, you might show up for a booking only to be sent home because the clothes don’t fit. That’s unprofessional and a big waste of time for everyone involved (including yourself).   It’s worth noting that its often easier and more accurate to have another person take your measurements for you. Also, when measuring, make sure the measuring tape is flat against your body. And, make sure you’re standing relaxed with your arms at your sides and that you’re wearing tight-fitting underwear. Required Measurements for Female Models Height.  In bare feet, stand tall and straight with your back against a wall. Have someone run a ruler or something that can be placed on the tallest part of your head straight back to the wall. Mark the wall where the ruler touches. Measure the distance from the floor to the mark on the wall.  Bust.  Many aspiring models aren’t always aware that, in modeling, your bust size is not your bra size. It’s actually the fullest part of your bust. First, place the tape measure around the fullest part of your bust, at nipple level. Make sure the tape is parallel to the floor. Then, holding the tape measure, take a full breath in and out to allow the tape to slide to a comfortable, yet snug, position. This number is your modeling bust size. Waist.  Just like your bust measurement, your waist measurement may be a little different from what you’re used to. It’s not your jeans size. A true waist measurement needs to be taken at the smallest part of your waist. This could be at your belly button  or even a few inches above it. Hold the tape measure snugly, but not too tightly, to find your natural waistline.Hips.  Many models incorrectly measure around their hipbones, resulting in a much smaller hip measurement. Instead, standing with your feet together, measure around the fullest part of your hips and bum. This is the hip measurement agencies are looking for.   Required Measurements forMaleModels Height.  In bare feet, stand tall and straight with your back against a wall. Have someone run a ruler or something that can be  placed on the tallest part of your head straight back to the wall. Mark the wall where the ruler touches.  Measure the distance from the floor to the mark on the wall.Neck.  Place the tape measure around your lower neck, just below your Adam’s apple. Tighten the tape, then loosen it off a bit by slipping two fingers between the tape and your neck. Round up to the next half-inch.   Chest.  Wrap the tape measure under your armpits, around the fullest part of your chest. Make sure the tape is snug, but not so tight that you can’t breathe normally. That’s your chest measurement.  Waist. A true waist measurement needs to be taken at the smallest part of your waist. This could be at your belly button  or even a few inches above it. Hold the tape snugly, but not too tightly, to find your natural waistline- thats your true measurement.Sleeve.  First, place your hand on your hip. Then, starting the tape measure at the center point where your neck meets your shoulders, measure down along your arm and to your wrist. Stop measuring right where the wrist meets the palm of your hand. Jacket size.  You may have seen jacket sizes written as 40 Regular or 38 Long. The number refers to your chest size, and the “Regular” or “Long” refers to the length of the jacket. In general, your height determines the length you’ll need. Regular sizes are for men roughly between 58 and 511 and Long sizes are for men over 6 feet.

The report highlighted how women are faring in business across the globe.The index  used “12 indicators and 25 sub-indicators”  to examine 54 economies, which reportedly make up 78.6% of working women internationally.“Entrepreneurship” was defined broadly: “any attempt at new business or new venture creation, which may include, but not limited to self-employment, creation of a new business organization, or expansion of an existing business.”Based on the findings, the nature of a woman’s involvement in business may depend on where she is: her location can affect both her successes and challenges.The United States ranks 10th in business ownership for women  The country with the highest percenta ge of female business owners is Uganda, at 35%,  followed by Botswana, New Zealand, Russia with 33%, Australia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, China and Spain. The United States ranks after Spain, with around 31% of all business owners being women. (Which means, of course, that 69% of American business owners are men.)Poor working conditions don’t stop women from being business ownersTwo lower- and lower-middle income countries emerged as places with some of the highest percentages of women business owners overall, even though they reportedly didn’t have the best working environments or financial systems.If you guessed Uganda and Bangladesh, you’re right.Uganda had the highest percentage of women business owners, at 34.8%, which, the index  says, is “suggesting that women are as likely as men to start a business activity, and have started one for a maximum of three and a half years. They have also been active over the past 12 months seeking to borrow or set aside funds to set up a bu siness.”Apparently, there is also a “healthy” amount of “social acceptance” of women entrepreneurs. The country was, however, classified as low income.But this hasn’t come without its challenges.The index found that “women entrepreneurs at the micro level” in Uganda don’t have much  â€œaccess to financial services” or financing because many don’t have credit history, so they can’t take out loans.Another nation - classified as “lower middle income” - is in a similar situation.Bangladesh also had a  high percentage of women business owners, at 32%, according to the index, but women in business face certain obstacles there: among them, “very little acceptance and encouragement from society,” which hinders women from getting many leadership roles.But there’s good news: change is coming.The “the unique traits of being very high risk takers and having undeniably outstanding resilience to hardships and natural calamities is helping to drive the entrepr eneurship landscape (and high women business ownership representation) in this market,” the index said.Where women are winning in business, and have high supportWomen entrepreneurs tended to do best in specific places.Five of the top 10 markets with the highest overall index scores, according to Mastercard, are: New Zealand (74.4), Canada (72.4), the United States (69.9), Sweden (69.6) and Singapore (69.5),  according to the index.Women thrive in these places because they  tend to have healthy, small- and medium-sized “business communities,” they can conduct business relatively smoothly, and their governments function at a high standard, as detailed in a press release.These conditions have contributed to women’s success in the working world, but structural problems still hold women back in business, a Mastercard executive said.“The prevalence of ambitious, resourceful women should be regarded as a prime business opportunity.
