How to Check References and a Reference Checking Format

How to Check References and a Reference Checking FormatHow to Check References and a Reference Checking FormatChecking job or employment references is time-consuming and frequently unsatisfactory, as many employers, despite legislation that provides protection for references, refuse to offer more than dates of employment, salary history, and job title. Secondly, if youre not careful, each reference check can turn into a friendly chat during which you dont obtain the information you need to make an objective decision about hiring your candidate. If you have the opportunity to reach your candidates manager, you are likely to get better information that highlights the candidates skills and contributions. Talking to Human Resources rarely yields the kind of information that you need to make a hiring decision. Many companies today, because of the fear of potential lawsuits, have adopted policies that state that HR must respond to all reference checks. These policies also forbid managers a nd employees from talking with a candidates hintergrund checker in a background check. Who Should Check References? Reference checking is often relegated to Human Resources in organizations. Thats not who should own reference checking. The manager of the lokalitt should check the employment references. He or she has the most to lose if the needed skills andcultural fitdont work out. The managers feel for the viability of the candidate is also key to the rolles eventual success as an employee. The managers support of and belief in the candidates ability to successfully perform the job form the foundation for the persons eventual success in your organization. Sure, Human Resources can own the reference checking process, check references for entry-level jobs, andcheck the candidates list of prepped references. But for most jobs, the manager of the position is the best person to check the references of former and current employers. This is especially true for talking with past employ ers and the candidates former bosses. The manager knows the technical qualifications a candidate must bring to a position. The manager knows the appropriate questions to ask the current and/or former employer about the candidates work. The manager can listen for statements that indicate cultural fit and that the strengths listed match the strengths you need. Before you turn your managers loose on reference checking, however, training in how to check references is required. Your managers will range from talented interviewers to tongue-tied professionals unable to ask the appropriate questions without your training, coaching, and mentoring. Since you never get a second chance, particularly with the candidates former manager, doing it right the first time is paramount. And, this training needs to include how to reach the manager, how to bypass the HR office, if possible, and how to help the reference open up and communicate to you about the potential employee Use a Standard Format t o Check References As with most Human Resources processes, a standard reference checking format is useful. You can easily compare candidates and ensure you are asking the right questions to make an educated decision before offering the applicant a job with your company. Dont check references until you are ready to make an offer to a candidate. This saves staff time and demonstrates your respect for the candidate. After all, you dont know whether his current employer or her favorite professor even know that he or she is looking for a new position. (It ispreferable thatcandidates tell their employer, but realize this isnt always possible, or even desirable.) Here are the recommended format and sample questions that you can use to check references. Make sure that you verify that the candidates reference checking permission signature is on your employment application before starting the interview. If its not, ask the candidate to sign the application before you check references. This i s recommended as a precaution so employers are legally and ethically safe. personenname Reference Name Company Name Company Address Company Phone Dates of Employment From To Starting Position Ending Position Starting Salary Ending Salary What does your company do? Please describe your reporting relationship with the candidate? If none, in what capacity did you observe the candidates work? Reason for Leaving Please describe the key responsibilities of the candidate in his/her most recent position. How many reporting staff did the candidate manage? Their roles? Tell me about the candidates most important contributions to the achievement of your organizations mission and goals. Describe the candidates relationships with his/her coworkers, reporting staff (if applicable), and supervisors. Talk about the attitude and outlook the candidate brought to the workplace. Describe the candidates productivity, commitment to quality and customer orientation. What are the candidates most significan t strengths? What are the candidates most significant weaknesses? What is your overall assessment of the candidate? We are hiring this candidate to (job title or quick description). Would you recommend him/her for this position? Why or why not? Would you rehire this individual? Why or why not? Are there additional comments youd like to make? Is there a question that I should ask that I may have missed that will help us understand what this candidate potentially brings to our workplace? Is there anything else we should know to make a hiring decision about this employee? Thank you for your assistance in helping us make a hiring decision relative to this candidate.

How to avoid jealousy and envy from poisoning your life

How to avoid jealousy and envy from poisoning your lifeHow to avoid jealousy and envy from poisoning your lifeTo speak ill of others is a dishonest way of praising ourselves. - Will DurantMother, what is water? - asked the baby fishWater is what you swim in. Water is what youre mostly made of. Its everywhere around you. - the mother fish replied. But I cant binnensee it. - said the baby.Lifes most precious things are like water - they surround us, yet we dont see them.Do you see what you have? Or simply pay attention to what other people have, achieve or the recognition they get? Thats how envy and jealousy get into your life - rather than appreciating the water around you they bring out the worst in you.Jealousy and envy are related though are not the same - they are two different types of poison. How envy and jealousy harm youJealousy is no mora than feeling alone against smiling enemies. - Elizabeth BowenEnvy and jealousy travel together but are different emotions - both are negative and can make you feel miserable and ruin your relationships.Envy is a two-person relationship I want what you have. Jealousy is a three-person triangle I want the recognition you have from others. When you wish you have your colleagues office, thats envy. When you feel threatened by how much your boss praises one of your colleagues work, thats jealousy.Envy is resentment toward other because of their possessions or success. You idealize when you are envious. You dont just want what they have you want their stature too.Jealousy is when a third person threatens a relationship - you are afraid to lose someone you love in the hands of other.Jealousy is an anticipatory emotion as Ralph Hupka said. Jealousy causes us to take precautionary measures. Should those fail and the partner has an affair, the new situation arouses anger, depression, and disappointment. the Professor of Psychology at California State University added.Jealousy and envy are natural instincts. However, you ca n manage how you react. Both emotions mask other feelings that can become lethal. They hide our insecurity, shame or need to possess - they feed our inner-critic making us feel worthless.Envy is a reaction to lacking something Jealousy is a reaction to the threat of losing something or someone.A painful ancient symptomBoth jealousy and envy originate from the primitive fight-or-flight response. When you feel under attack, your brain triggers a warning signal. Our tribal ancestors lived in fear of arousing the envy of the gods by their pride or good fortune. Heras envy for Aphrodite set off the Trojan War in Greek mythology.Jealousy and envy are still the cause of most current conflicts both in the professional and personal world.Envy drives to self-sabotage causing wars and others conflicts. It typically becomes a group phenomenon, and turns to hatred and assaults against others, as Frank J. Ninivaggi explains on Envy Theories. We have a false sense of justice - our system emphasize s the equality of all. Thats a curious paradox the sense that we deserve our fair share of things is at the root of envy.Life is not fair. There will always be people with mora talents, health, possessions or reputation than yourself. Entitlement doesnt help - thinking that you deserve better makes you focus on the outcome rather than on the effort.Jealousy originates from the prospect of failure envy from actual failure. To let go of these two negative emotions, we must thoroughly understand where those feelings come from. And stop seeing yourself as a failure. We create our own poisonEnvy is the religion of the mediocre. It comforts them, it soothes their worries, and finally, it rots their souls, allowing them to justify their meanness and their greed until they believe these to be virtues. - Carlos Ruiz ZafnBuddhism teaches us that whatever causes our suffering has its roots in the Three Poisons Ignorance, Hate, and Greed.Ignorance is the mother of all poisons. Its the belief tha t things are fixed and permanent. When we see that someone is doing better than us, rather than focus on how we can improve, we get stuck on the current status.Thats why comparisons are deceiving theres always people that are better and worse than us. When we compare, we see things as static. We look outside (what others have) rather than inside (what we can change). We create our own poison and then drink it.Ignorance is clinging to people, objects or emotions. We dont want things to change. Its the desire to protect our idealized status. The antidote to ignorance is wisdom - self-awareness can free yourself from poisonous emotions.Hate arises from ignorance. We believe the world revolves around us. We want to stand out from the universe instead of seeing our connectedness to everything and everyone else. Our society is a system - when we disconnect from it, we start seeing everyone as a competitor or an enemy. Envy and jealousy are just defense mechanisms.Greed is not just wantin g mora - its the fantasy that adding more stuff will provide personal gratification. Unfortunately, delusion creates a vicious cycle. Not only it frustrates us we crave for more. Greed is also based on your need to protect your status - you believe that objects define who you are.Attachment motivates envy and jealousy. You cling to things or relationships you dont have - you want to be in control to feel more important.Bertrand Russell said Beggars do not envy millionaires, though of course, they will envy other beggars who are more successful. We direct our envy at those whom we compare ourselves such as your co-workers, friends, relatives or neighbors.Social Media has not only expanded the beggars you compare to its an accelerant that turns envy into a wildfire. A picture-perfect society is doing us no good by encouraging envy and fruitless comparisons. So, how can you avoid this lethal poison? The antidote for envy and jealousyIf ignorance is the mother of all poisons, then wisdo m is the universal antidote. Being wise is appreciating the water around you.Wisdom is listening to other points of view rather than discriminating to carefully examine facts even if they contradict our beliefs to be objective rather than biased, and to always be ready to change our beliefs when opposite facts are presented to us.Wisdom is to directly see and understand for yourself - to keep an open mind rather than being closed-minded.Certainty can cripple your wisdom, as I wrote here. Embracing a skeptical mindset will help you see life sharply. The path of just believing what you are told is easy. The path towards wisdom requires confidence, courage, adaptability, and patience. The antidote for greed is generosity the one for hate is loving kindness.Letting go of your possessions and relationships requires wisdom too. You realized you dont need to possess objects or people to be yourself. They can contribute to your joy, but your happiness does not depend on them.Non-attachment doesnt mean not caring - it means recognizing there was never something to cling to in the first place. You stop looking at what others have. You free yourself from owning or being owned. How to overcome being poisonedDont envy what people have, emulate what they did to have it. - Tim Fargo1. Increase your self-awarenessTo know yourself is to accept yourself. Self-awareness requires observing and accepting who you are - not who you should or shouldnt be. Reflect without judging yourself. Learn to be gentle and forgiving with yourself - youll stop needing possessions or relationships to feel greater. Are you jealous? Are you always comparing yourself to others? Deep inside you might feel insecure, frightened, betrayed or threatened. Thats okay. Feedback will help you uncover blind spots so you can conquer them.To increase your self-awareness, you need to look outside, not just inside as I wrote here. People who score high in self-awareness know themselves well and understand how oth ers see them too.2. Free yourself from poisonous comparisonsBecome your own standard. Learn to appreciate yourself for who you are, not for what you possess or your achievements. Success is personal - happiness is defining success on your own terms.Social pressure will only make you frustrated - it seeds envy for not having more or make you feel jealous if someone gets more recognition than you do. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday. Focus on your improvement, not others. Comparing to other people is a lose-lose situation.3. Prevent an outbreakNormal jealousy happens early in a relationship it can be improved by improving the self-esteem of affected partners. Honesty is critical to stop early symptoms before they produce a jealousy outbreak.Keeping and maintaining trust is not easy - dont confuse it with blind faith. Embrace trust as something fragile and imperfect, as I wrote here. Jealousy is about control trust is about confidence and freedom. You cannot avoid feeling j ealous, but you can prevent it from getting worse and worse.4. Emulate rather than envyLooking at others for inspiration is not bad the problem is trying to be like them. Medium Staff is full of articles on how Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, or Tony Robbins became successful and wealthy. That doesnt mean you must follow their paths or aim for the same goals.Reacting with emulation rather than envy is to open up to learn from others. Each life is unique. Those who compare themselves to famous entrepreneurs end doing nothing. Choose your destination and take the learning route, not the shortcut. Copycats are boring its better to be original as Leon Ho wrote here.5. Feel the pain firsthandEnvy and jealousy are not just lethal for yourself. They can also harm those around you. Sometimes you need to take a little bit of your own poison to realize that.Let others become your antidote. If you are the jealous one, ask your partner to overplay her/ his jealous part for one or two weeks. Feeling the pa in firsthand will help you realize the side-effects of your own behaviors. If you suffer from envy, interact with people that have dramatically less or more than you have. Live one day with a total budget of two dollars. Volunteer one night to serve at a millionaires party. Compare both experiences to see what it says about you when you experience the extremes.- - - Lifes most precious things are like water - they are around you waiting for you to pay attention and appreciate what you have.Envy and jealousy are lethal poisons its up to you to avoid being stung.Increase Your Self AwarenessReceive my weekly Insights for ChangemakersSign Up NowDownload my free ebook Stretch Your MindThisarticlefirst appeared on Medium.

4 reasons fulfillment will make you a strong person

4 reasons fulfillment will make you a strong person4 reasons fulfillment will make you a strong personI met Oleg when I worked as an undercover FBI agent. Oleg was a Russian diplomat sent to the U.S. to steal propriety technology. My job was to find the answer to two questions 1) what specific technology was he after, and 2) could I turn him into a double agent? The way to pursue these questions wasnt obvious at first, but Oleg himself provided a clue soon after I met him. When I discovered that he had signed up to attend a seminar, I signed up too. On the day of the event, hundreds of people filled a large auditorium, and I worried that it would be impossible to meet Oleg in the large crowd. I arrived early and waited in a corner until he entered the room and settled in the back row. The seat next to him was empty, so I wasted no time as I gently shoved an older gentleman out of the way so I could get there before anyone else.As we waited for the program to start, we chatted about wh y we thought the seminar was important. After only a few minutes, one thing became obvious the seminar held no interest for him. As we talked further, his entire assignment in the United States offered no fulfillment or job satisfaction.Olegs lack of fulfillment made him an easy target for the FBI, but bedrngnis because the FBI thought he would betray his country. Instead, it was because Oleg was a weak man who thought fulfillment was something money could buy. Here are 4 reasons fulfillment will make you a strong person1. A strong person plans their lifeA Harvard Business School survey shows we have a 23-year low in job satisfaction and 84% of Americans say they want a new job. Like Oleg, fruchtwein of us are passive spectators in our life. We plan careers, retirement nest eggs, and vacations, but we do not plan our life.Over 80% of Americans do not have goals 16% say they have goals but dont write them down. Less than 4% write them down.Mental toughness creates strong people who li ve their life with purpose and meaning. They are an active participant in where their life is going. Recent research concludes that fulfillment and purposefulness are strong predictors of longevity. How To Make It Work For YouDont forget to set goals in all areas of your lifePlan a vacation and savor the anticipation.Explore spirituality,Take up a new hobby.Exercise the brain.Stretch the body.Review your finances.Expand your social network.Fix broken relationships that are important.Evaluate your career path at least once a year to determine whether youre on track.2. A strong person uncovers their core valuesBronnie Ware is a palliative nurse in Australia who spent several years caring for patients in the last twelve weeks of their life. The most common regret of the dying is that they wished theyd had the courage to live a life true to themselves, not the life others expected of them. When people understand that their life is almost over and look back, they see how many dreams have g one unfulfilled. The regret comes from dying while knowing they had not pursued the things that would produce value and meaning for them. They didnt honor their dreams by the choices they made, or didnt make.To find fulfillment, we need to be strong enough to uncover the things that are most important to us. Too many times we suppress them to keep peace with those around us. But when this happens, we end up with a mediocre existence because we havent allowed ourselves to become the person were truly meant to be.The Olegs of this world are not strong people because the search for what brings them value has ended. They are susceptible to the suggestions and whims of those around them. Strong people do not settle for the values imposed upon them by others. They are in touch with their core values and dont look to other people for self-worth.How To Make It Work For YouMake a list of what youd do if money werent an issueRemember what brought you joy as a childEnjoy those memories for a f ew momentsReflect on what brings a smile to your face today3. A strong person pursues work that has meaningDo you ever find yourself so immersed in what youre doing that you lose track of time? Think a minute about this. When does this loss of time and total engagement typically occur for you?The new field of Positive Psychology shows that the happiest people are those who have discovered their unique strengths and virtues- and then use those strengths and virtues for a purpose that is greater than their own personal goals.Viktor Frankl, who survived a Nazi concentration camp, once said What man needs is not a tensionless state but rather the striving and struggling for some goal worthy of him.The loss of self-consciousness that happens when you are completely absorbed in an activity - intellectual, professional, or physical - is described as flow by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. How To Make It Work For YouThis is what to look for in a flow state the activity mustBe volunta ryBe enjoyableRequire skill and be challenging (but not too challenging)Have clear goals towards success.Let you feel as though you have controlProvide immediate feedback with room for growth4. A strong person nurtures healthy relationshipsThe conclusion of the Grant Study (a 72-year study of the lives of 268 men) was this The only thing that really matters in life is our relationships with other people. This response does not surprise behavior psychologists who want to understand why simple existence - why being housed, fed, safe, and alive - is empty and meaningless to us. What mora do we need in order to feel that life is worthwhile? The answer that comes up again and again is that we all seek a cause beyond ourselves. Humans need relationships which do not always produce happiness, and sometimes even produce pain. The reason is this we all require devotion to something bigger than ourselves for our lives to have value and meaning. When we nurture healthy relationships, it improve s our happiness, even for introverts. Those deep relationships can be with either family or friends. Daniel Gilbert, author of Stumbling on Happiness, explains itWe are happy when we have a family, we are happy when we have friends and almost all the other things we think make us happy are actually just ways of getting more family and friends. How To Make It Work For YouSince modern psychological research shows that being kind has benefits for everyone, create a grid of people with whom you can both network and nurture healthy relationships. Edit the list so you start with people with whom you share deep bonds and values. They are your priority. Create a criterion for your next layer of contacts. Beside their names, list ways to maintain contact and nurture the relationship. As the circle widens, the contacts on the peripheral are less important and deserve less commitment on your part. Move people from an inner to an outer circle (and vice versa) as circumstances change. If Oleg had been a person to demand more from his job than a paycheck, he would have been a stronger person. Had he taken the time to reflect on the values important to him, he would have been a stronger person. He would have never given in, whether in great or small things, if it compromised his convictions. If he had been a stronger person, the FBI would never have persuaded him to betray his country.Names have been changed to protect the identify of the guilty.Thisarticlefirst appeared onLaRaeQuy.com.

Autocratic Leadership Pros and Cons

Autocratic Leadership Pros and ConsAutocratic Leadership Pros and ConsYou may not have heard of the term autocratic leadership, but youve likely encountered people who lead that way. You may have had a boss who is autocratic, or you may be an autocratic boss yourself. And just like any leadership style, autocratic leadership has pros and cons. What is Autocratic Leadership? As the name suggests- its a very self-styled leadership. The leader doesnt take eingabe from others and makes all the decisions, which is quite the opposite of democratic leadership or servant leadership. An autocratic leader will usually Accept little or no input from group membersMake almost all of the decisionsDictate all work methods and processesMake all decisions and do most of the important tasksWork in a highly structured and rigid mannerDiscourage creativity and out-of-the-box thinkingClearly outline and communicate rulesEmphasize the importance of following rules There are times when autocratic leade rship can be considered an advantage, and there are times when its considered a disadvantage. ProsEncourages strict adherence to regulatory protocolsProvides structure and stability for employeesMaintains clarity on company vision and missionConsFosters low employee engagement and satisfactionLeads to potential micro-management of employeesDiscourages new ideas that could benefit a company The Pros of Autocratic Leadership If youre running a business, or a department, that needs to follow strict protocols- either because of government regulations or business needs- an autocratic leadership style can make sense. For example, call centers often have strict protocols that employees must follow. These protocols dont allow room for a lot of creativity or out-of-the-box thinking on the part of the employees. The manager dictates the rules and the employees follow them. Autocratic leaders can also find success in areas with strict regulatory protocols. You may identify a better way to do the work, but the government simply wont allow it. Leaders dont gain advantages by listening to and considering new ideas from other people. Perhaps, though, one of the most significant benefits of autocratic leadership comes when the leader has a clear vision and is brilliant enough to be right. Many people identify Steve Jobs and Martha Stewart as famously successful autocratic leaders. Jobs and Stewart both knew what they wanted and set out to achieve it, and if you didnt get in line, you didnt last long. Similarly, Walt Disney had his dream, and he set out to follow it, to great success. All three had brilliant ideas and brilliantly implemented their ideas. If they had had mora mediocre ideas, they would have benefited from a more democratic leadership style. The Cons of Autocratic Leadership Starting with Jobs, Stewart, and Disney, though, you can see that there are some problems when only one idea partie exists. Jobs was fired from his own company (although he did come back to run the company again- successfully). Stewart landed in prison. Walt Disney had his brother, Roy Disney, who Walt could not fire, keeping him towing the financial line. Many people dont enjoy working for a boss who just tells you what to do and how to do it. So, unless the autocratic leader is genuinely brilliant and has a sparkling personality, people who are autocratic leaders may have difficulty encouraging employee engagement. Its also easy for an autocratic leader to slip into micro-management. While they can seem synonymous, they are not. An autocratic leader generally wants his or her ideas implemented, but doesnt have to stand over you and dictate every small detail like a micro-manager would. A micro-manager can also elicit ideas from staff and have an unstructured workplace but controls parts of the work to an extreme level. If Youre an AutocraticLeader If you like being in charge and have a grand vision that you want others to implement, you may be an autocrat ic leader. What you need is someone to check- a Roy to your Walt. If youre a middle manager, this person is often your boss. If youre the owner or CEO, having a board to whom you listen is helpful. What you need is clear feedback that you listen to- otherwise, you may find yourself failing. When you hire, look for people who are happy to carry out your ideas. If you search for highly creative-out-of-the-box thinkers, youll end up with an unhappy staff. On the other hand, if you tend toward democratic or servant leadership, dont hire people who want to do their job and go home without any thought about coming up with new ideas. They wont be happy under your leadership either. Regardless of your methods, make sure you look at employee happiness, productivity, and company success. If youre doing poorly in any area, you are the one who needs to change. - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance writer who spent 10 years in corporate human resources, where she hired, fired, managed the numbers, and double-checked with the lawyers.

Revenue, stats and percentages are instant indicators of how your work made a difference. The more you can quantify a?projects outcome, the better.Answering common portfolio?questionsHeres how to respond to questions that might trip you up during a portfolio reviewQ What would you have done differently with this piece?A?Never disparage a former employer or client. Instead, demonstrate tact and diplo macy. Discuss what you might have done with a bigger budget or more time, for instance.Q What do you think of our current marketing materials?A?Dont harshly critique the work or give hollow praise. Show that youre observant by commenting on the strengths and weaknesses of each piece. Suggest how you would improve the collateral to better meet business needs.Q Which piece are you most proud of?A?Keep in mind that employers may be more interested in why youre pleased with the sample than in the work itself, because your answer reveals the things that inspire or motivate you.Q What was your role in this piece?A Resist the temptation to exaggerate your contributions. If your role in a project was minimal, it should not be included in your book. If the piece was a group effort, explain how the team worked together and use the opportunity to highlight your communication and collaboration skills.Make it a living documentFinally, keep updating your portfolio with your best work so the?sampl es are fresh when a career opportunity arises. Its far easier to archive and summarize your work when youve just completed it than to revisit it months later when youve forgotten many of the details. Regular maintenance also makes it easier to swap pieces in and out of your physical portfolio as you customize it for a potential employer. The bottom line Theres no one-size-fits-all portfolio solution. To land a job, youll need to tailor your?portfolio?so it presents work thats most relevant to the position. Tags

How To Satiate Demand for More College Grads

How To Satiate Demand for More College Grads The National Association of Colleges and Employers is predicting robust growth in the hiring of the Class of 2014 with growth in jobs around 7.8 percent when compared to the Class of 2013. Throw in opportunities at international operations and the number jumps to 12 percent. Overall, the report (PDF) said, degrees in business, engineering, computer/information science, sciences, and communications disciplines are going to be most in demand by employers. Now the employers just have to find the soon-to-be-minted college graduates to hire.Texas AM offers some strong advice that can be helpful to both on-campus recruiters and prospective graduates looking for work. On its career center website, the university says, The key to successful recruiting is building and maintaining a presence on campus. Organizations who enjoy the most success are those who have n ame recognition and a positive image with students. In order to attain a higher level of campus presence, employers are encouraged to use an integrated approach involving a variety of activities. The universitys first suggestion is participation in on-campus career fairs. OK, so not all of the advice is revolutionary but its good to cover the basics. When Willie Sutton was asked why he robbed banks, he answered, Because thats where the money is. Potential employees are going to be at career fairs.Avail yourself of any job posting sites universities and colleges have to offer. Theyre a common way for prospective grads and recent alum to see what you have to offer.Use any online-recruitment tools that universities and colleges have to offer. The career centers will provide you spots for on-campus interviews.Host an information session on campus. Its good absatzwirtschaft for getting your brand in front of the students. As Texas AM points out, it allows businesses to explaintheir organi zations to students, rather than use interview time for this purpose. Othersuse these sessions to observe and interact with interview candidates in a less structuredenvironment. This wont help you during spring recruitment drives, but it does lay the foundation for future hiring. The university recommends providing students with learning opportunities while exposing them to your organization by offering internship, cooperative education, or externship opportunities. Test out potential hires before graduation and enhance your staffing resources. As the university points out, once a student has gone through your organization as an intern, he or she becomes a brand ambassador for you on campus.Texas AM says companies can also have success by volunteering on campus. Its career center programs, for example, include mock interviews, the company visit, career profiling, and interview techniques. Again, as with the information sessions, it helps recruiters be seen in a more informal light ou tside of the formal interview and it also helps students get to know your brand as being community minded and informed because of your expert presence on topics important to them.Of course, money goes a long way in your recruiting efforts, too. Texas AM says (and its hardly unique among institutions of higher learning), Generous contributions from employer partners have enabled The Career Center to expand services and resources to better serve students and employers. As a result of their highly visible contributions, employers have enjoyed a competitive advantage through enhanced publicity and the opportunity to work directly with staff. All of the above advice works for students, too. Take part when a company you are interested in comes to campus and youll get noticed by company recruiters in a less formal setting. Career center fairs, sessions on mock interviews and career profiling, as well as interview techniques are all forms of networking that will be valuable tools to develop further along in your career.

Researcher Focus - Additive Manufacturing

Researcher Focus - Additive Manufacturing Researcher Focus - Additive Manufacturing Researcher Focus - Additive Manufacturingby Paul GlanvilleProfessor Yong Chen from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Southern California talks about Thin Shell Structures Inspired by OrigamiLearn more about this research through the 2013 ASME Congress Proceedings An Origami Inspired Additive Manufacturing Process for Building Thin-Shell Structures. For those paying attention to the world of mechanical engineering, additive manufacturing, often referred to as 3D printing, needs no introduction. The ability to create prototypes and replacement parts at the point of use without the waste of traditional (subtractive) manufacturing is nothing short of revolutionary. Also the precision of todays 3D printers allows for geometries and tolerances difficult to impossible to make with current manufacturing techniques. One example of the geometries enabled by 3D printing are thin-walled hollow structures (e.g. small containers), historically difficult to manufacture with traditional methods. Researchers at the University of Southern California (USC) are investigating how parts created through additive manufacturing can use origami-inspired folding techniques to create these thin-walled structures. How did you initially get into your very intriguing research concerning additive manufacturing with thin shell structures? How did the inspiration from origami come about? In our research group, we worked on improving building speed of additive manufacturing for several years. We developed various approaches and Origami was one of the topics identified by NSF solicited proposals in 2012. We began to investigate the origami idea to improve the building speed of additive manufacturing.Your research presented experimental results from a wide set of test conditions, including several assembly tests. What were some challenges you experienced? The test cases were d esigned to demonstrate the capability of the developed method. How to fold the designed sheet accurately is one of challenges we experienced. In addition, we are actively looking for applications that may benefit from our approach. What work remains before you complete this RD program? After submitting the paper, we continued working on the actuation of the folding actions. We will publish some following papers based on our future investigation. What other applications of additive manufacturing interest you? I am interested in novel applications of additive manufacturing such as dental, aerospace, and robotics. What other research projects unrelated to additive manufacturing are you currently engaging in, or if this is your focus, what is your next project? Additive manufacturing is currently the focus of our research group. There are many problems to be addressed for this type of manufacturing processes to be more widely used. We are working on many issues including developing funct ional materials, design for additive manufacturing, smooth surface fabrication, quality control, etc. When did you first realize you wanted to become an engineer, not just an engineer but a researcher, one that looks for solutions to the tough questions? Was there any other career you thought about pursuing? I wanted to be an engineer, especially a mechanical engineer, since my father was a mechanical engineer. I decided to be a researcher during my PhD study. I enjoy solving new challenges using creative approaches. Being a professor in an engineering school is the career I always wanted.Do you have experience in industry, in addition, to your experiences in academia? I worked in industry (as a RD engineer at 3D Systems) for five years before joining USC. I enjoyed the opportunities of working closely with customers and experience the influence of my development work in solving their daily problems. This still influences my research at USC, especially how to pick important research problems to spend time on.What best practices would you offer an early career engineer about being successful in their careers? It helps my career to be actively involved with professional societies including ASME and SME. It enabled me to meet some senior researchers, who I know by name from their publications. Ive gotten a lot of good advice from them.Professor Yong Chen has published papers on The ASME Digital Collection, including the following from the 2013 ASME Congress Proceedings (IMECE2013) An Origami Inspired Additive Manufacturing Process for Building Thin-Shell Structures.

How To Tell If An Email Is A Job Scam

How To Tell If An Email Is A Job Scam How To Tell If An Email Is A Job Scam We’ve recently been looking at ways to identify  and respond to  the scam jobs that are commonly found online. But some scammers will proactively reach out to unsuspecting job seekers by email. Here are some ways to identify potential recruiting email scams. Pay attention to the sender Beware of emails that come from free or unfamiliar domains. Free domains include yahoo.com, hotmail.com, gmail.com, etc. The domain should match the name of the company where you applied. (The only exception to this rule is for small businesses, which may not have their own domain.) Beware of unsolicited email. If you receive an email from a job that you didn’t apply for, it’s probably a scam. Do not engage with suspected spam emails Do not offer your personal information or money to anyone who emails you. To apply for a job, you should not need to supply your birthday, social security number, bank account number, credit card numbers or other personal details. Resist the temptation to reply to a suspected scam email or offer your phone number by calling- scammers will sell your phone number or email address to companies who will send you spam email and spam call you. Here is an example of an actual scam email claiming to be sent from Simply Hired: From: Simply Hired Recruitment Solutions [omitted].simplyhired@post.com Subject: Re: Job Application Dear Applicant, This is to notify you that your application recently shortlisted by [omitted] among other applications from Asia, Africa and the Middle East for participation in their 2015/2016 Graduate Training and Employment Program has been approved. You are required to contact their Human Resources Department within 72 hours via email: ( [omitted]@gmail.com ) for important updates with regards to your application. Best Regards, Simply Hired Note the sender’s email address at the domain post.com instead of simplyhired.com. Simply Hired will never contact job seekers about job opportunities with other companies. Any email about a specific job opportunity with a company that is not Simply Hired that claims to be from Simply Hired is not legitimate. This unsolicited email was forwarded to us by a job seeker who didn’t apply to any jobs with the company. As soon as we found out about the problem, we were able to take measures to stop the scam and warn people about this fraudulent email. Please forward any suspicious emails to support@simplyhired.com and we will investigate right away.

Why Everyone Should Begin Careers in Sales

Why Everyone Should Begin Careers in Sales Why Everyone Should Begin Careers in Sales Sales careers are not for everyone. Thats pretty clear. Just consider how many people are in sales positions only because they couldnt find a job doing what they really want to do. Or think about how many people youve met who said that theyve tried sales and it wasnt for them. The facts are that sales careers are not only not for everyone but also not everyone is right for a career in sales. But starting off your career in a sales position, despite you believing or even knowing that you have no interest in staying in sales, can be the best thing for your career, long term. Heres why. The Front Line Sales reps are often referred to as the soldiers of a company. Thats because, in most cases, only sales professionals meet face to face on a continuous basis with a companys most important assets: Their customers. Being as close to a companys customers gives those in sales a unique viewpoint and an advantage over everyone in the company. They get to hear, direct from customers mouths, what is good and what needs improvement in their companies. This information can make the rep a more informed, connected and valuable employee should they move up in the company and into a position outside of sales. Think about where you want your career to bring you and ask yourself if having some customer face to face experience will be an advantage for you. Understanding Finances While not all sales reps have finance degrees, most get a pretty good on the job education on a companys finances. Sales reps learn, by understanding their cost of goods sold and driving gross profit, how important it is that a company controls expenses and drives profitable revenues. Sales reps get a crash course in the unique finances of the company they work for and often advance into finance positions in larger businesses.   Dealing With People Sales professionals work with all types of people. They can meet with a strong type A person during their morning appointment then follow that meeting up with a sit down with an introvert before lunch. To be successful in sales, a sales rep needs to both build rapport and be influential with all types of people. This skill will serve them well as they advance their career, despite the possibility that they never move into a management position. Just having the skills to be comfortable speaking with all types of people is a huge advantage. And if you couple that with the gift of being influential, you can see how far they can go in their professional life. Taking Rejection As you know, sales careers are not for everyone. One facet of a career in sales that proves to be too much for some is all the rejection that sales reps need to face. Sales professionals are rejected by customers, prospects, competitors, and vendors all the time. In other words, sales is not a career for someone who cant handle rejection. But if you can put in a few years in a sales position, and learn how to properly handle being rejected (over and over and over again!) you will be in a stronger position no matter where your career path leads you. Just think of the confidence boost youll have when being rejected doesnt stop you in your tracks but only motivates you to push harder!

American Job Duration Increases but Remains Low

American Job Duration Increases but Remains Low American Job Duration Increases but Remains Low “Career-long jobs never existed for most workers,” Craig Copeland, EBRI senior research associate and author of the report, said. “Historically, most workers have repeatedly changed jobs during their working careers, and all evidence suggests that they will continue to do so in the future.” Historically, the U.S. workforce has had a relatively low median tenure and even older male workers (aged 55 to 64 years), who saw the largest change in tenure, plummeted from 14.7 years in 1963 to just 10.7 years in 2012. The overall trend of decreasing median tenure for men, however, has been more than offset by an increase for women workers. Also, the once wide gap between the traditionally long-tenured public sector and the shorter-tenured private sector has narrowed significantly.

Job Skills for an Automated World ME Today July 2012

Job Skills for an Automated World ME Today July 2012 Job Skills for an Automated World ME Today July 2012 Job Skills for an Automated World by ASME Strategic Issues Committee There is concern that technology is undermining the economy and causing widespread unemployment. Economists often describe the dislocation and unemployment caused by new technologies creative destruction. The process of technology destroying jobs is not a new concern. Nor is it a process without plenty of pain and suffering for those workers who dont have the skills to succeed in todays competitive job market. Studies based on previous periods of creative destruction show that this current low point will likely give way to growth in new industries based on new technologies. However, in the process, automation is continuously removing low skilled jobs which may never be replaced. Factory floor automation has removed many of the quality manufacturing jobs that formed the backbone of the middle class. Now information technology is taking over the functions of many service sector jobs from touch screen order systems in restaurants to high-end decision support tools for healthcare workers. The health of the economy depends on the ability of workers to retrain and for highly skilled entrepreneurs to create new opportunities for them. Jobs in growing areas such as science, engineering and management rely heavily on the continuous improvement of skills and high levels of creativity. They are supported by policies that value entrepreneurship, protect intellectual property, reduce burdensome regulation and provide superb educational opportunities for students and existing workers. Over the next decade, creativity will be the fuel that drives economic growth. Computers and advanced robotics will continue to take over tasks that are too time-consuming, too tedious, or too complex or laborious for human endeavors in both the manufacturing and service sectors. However, the skills that drive creativity (imagination, innovation and interaction), and provide a competitive advantage in a highly competitive global market, may never be fully replicated in machines. Those nations, communities and companies that value imagination, innovation and interaction will have the capacity to adapt and thrive in an automated world. Imagination: Imagination is the ability to create new ideas, products and solve problems through the power of insight. Innovation: Innovation is the iterative process of creating more effective products, processes and technologies. Interaction: Interaction is a vital part of society and drives creativity through the cross fertilization of ideas and experience. These three skills are highly interdependent on one another. Jonah Lehrer in his book Imagine provides numerous examples of breakthroughs created through an imaginative insight that is refined through a constant process of iteration that uses both sides of the brain. This process is heightened by the sharing of new ideas and experiences. It is for this reason that companies as different as 3M and Google regularly rotate scientists and engineers across divisions. Mechanical engineers and engineering companies that are able to harness the power of imagination, innovation and interaction will be in demand regardless of the development of new technology. Narrowly defined technical skills may become obsolete due to the development of new technology, but the ability to imagine and innovate will always remain in demand. By the same token, the ability of engineers to interact in diverse human networks will become more important as the scope and complexity of engineering projects increase. Implications for ASME Many of the current examples that demonstrate the power of creativity arise from the melding of engineering with other fields of study, such as the biological sciences. ASME can play a vital role by monitoring this growing area of research and sharing the findings with their members and partners. ASME can also work as an intermediary that facilitates interaction inside and outside the field of mechanical engineering. The first step may be bringing together experts from outside the engineering field with mechanical engineers to discuss imagination, innovation and interaction. ASME could also work with its partners to encourage and develop curriculum for engineers that advance these skills.

Financial Internship Alternatives

Financial Internship Alternatives Financial Internship Alternatives There are many opportunities for students and graduates seeking to gain experience in the financial services industry. Many begin their careers by going to financial services firms and/or checking out the finance departments of small, medium, and large corporations all over the country. During down times in the economy when the big players in the financial industry often enact a hiring freeze, they may still hire interns. Finding positions with smaller firms finance departments may be a good alternative since smaller firms create more jobs simply because more of them exist. Nonprofits are also an excellent source for many varied positions in business, including finance. Strategic Searching Successful internship and job searching includes the use of three basic strategies: Networking: Networking gives you an opportunity to speak with professionals currently working in the field. You might contact friends, family, faculty, previous employers, and alumni from your college who are currently working in your field of interest.Internship and Job Postings:  Checking out the current internship and job boards provides you with the current openings that are being posted in your field.Prospecting: Follow up on leads from your networking and job postings, and maintain a list of next steps as you work through each opportunity to narrow down to a list of worthwhile prospects. According to What Color Is Your Parachute, it takes about 80 eyes and ears to find a job. Its just a numbers game, so keep working on more prospects. Prospecting puts you in the drivers seat since your efforts will uncover many internships and jobs through research and follow-up with companies that are of interest to you. Since approximately 85 percent of jobs are never advertised, your networking and prospecting can be especially attractive ways to search for internships and jobs. Alternative Internships Available in Finance Below is just a small sampling of the many opportunities available. You can find internships like these by doing a little prospecting of your own. Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) offers opportunities for undergraduate or graduate business and accounting majors who are looking to gain experience in the field of finance in a nonprofit organization. For finance work, focus on internships in CDFs core area of Non-Profit Management, which includes the executive office and finance. Interns may assist in the preparation of 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) state registration filing requirements; as well as provide supporting data for financial reports, bank and account reconciliations, tracking of travel expense accounts, as well as other varied administrative duties. The Financial Services Forum  is a financial and economic policy organization that includes the chief executive officers of 20 of the largest and most diversified financial institutions operating in the United States. In 2019, the organization is offering interns a part-time, 10-week internship in international cybersecurity for the financial services sector.Intel Corporation  offers both student and graduate internships in finance. The company also has a Finance Summer Intern Program that offers a twelve-week assignment that links students with a professional mentor and a peer buddy. A perk of the program is a trip to Intel’s Santa Clara headquarters via their corporate jet for an event for all finance interns participating in the program. At the end of the program, students will do a presentation to senior management and others to showcase what you have accomplished over the summer. Interns are treated as full-time employees and thus receive a salary and may be eligible for addit ional benefits. S.C. Johnson Sons, Inc.  Finance and Accounting Internship Program offers a variety of opportunities for master and bachelor level students. SC Johnson offers students project-based internships where they can apply their skills and gain new knowledge. Some of the perks of the program include dinners with other finance employees of the company, a series of interactive Lunch-n-Learns, an annual pig roast, and several sporting event outings, competitive compensation, recreation fitness center, plus more. Many SC Johnson full â€"time employees started their career at the company as SCJ interns. Nonprofit Finance Fund  offers numerous opportunities across the nation. The NFF serves as a financial institution for nonprofit organizations. The NFF contributes to the advances and economic development goals in the nonprofit sector. Non-Traditional Places to Search Big corporations offer finance intern programs that are a good alternative to investment banks and financial services firms. You can also broaden your search into looking for companies with finance internship openings that are also engaged in types of business you might have a personal connection to or interest in. For example, the following companies had internship job listings in their finance departments, as posted on the job search site Indeed.com in summer 2019: TOMS Shoes: shoe manufacturer and wholesaler/retailerExperian Credit: Consumer credit reporting agencyCosta Farms: Large-scale, wholesale plant growerCity of Ridgefield, WA: City government finance departmentBay Federal Credit UnionEdwards Lifesciences: Medical equipment company specializing in artificial heart valvesAmerican Ballet Theater (ABT): For ballet fans Summer Internship Opportunities for Graduate Students Internships arent just for undergrads! Learn to Take Proper Measurements for Modeling Stats

Learn to Take Proper Measurements for Modeling Stats Learn to Take Proper Measurements for Modeling Stats There is always a lot of talk in the media about models and their weight. But, for fashion models and the agencies that represent them, it has never been about weight, it s a models measurements or stats that matter most.   If you are already represented by an agency, the agents there will make sure the stats on your promotional material are accurate. But, if you are just starting out and are looking for a modeling agency to represent you, it is essential that the stats you give to prospective agencies are accurate. Why You Need Accurate Measurements It’s not uncommon for new models to feel uncomfortable or even self-conscious when taking their measurements. But, as tempting as it is to forgo the process altogether, you should never neglect to include your stats when submitting your photos to agencies or scouts. Top international modeling agencies and scouts view thousands of photos every day and they are looking for complete submissions. Plus, they don’t have the time to chase down models for additional information. If you guesstimate your measurements or don’t measure correctly, you might show up for a booking only to be sent home because the clothes don’t fit. That’s unprofessional and a big waste of time for everyone involved (including yourself).   It’s worth noting that its often easier and more accurate to have another person take your measurements for you. Also, when measuring, make sure the measuring tape is flat against your body. And, make sure you’re standing relaxed with your arms at your sides and that you’re wearing tight-fitting underwear. Required Measurements for Female Models Height.  In bare feet, stand tall and straight with your back against a wall. Have someone run a ruler or something that can be placed on the tallest part of your head straight back to the wall. Mark the wall where the ruler touches. Measure the distance from the floor to the mark on the wall.  Bust.  Many aspiring models aren’t always aware that, in modeling, your bust size is not your bra size. It’s actually the fullest part of your bust. First, place the tape measure around the fullest part of your bust, at nipple level. Make sure the tape is parallel to the floor. Then, holding the tape measure, take a full breath in and out to allow the tape to slide to a comfortable, yet snug, position. This number is your modeling bust size. Waist.  Just like your bust measurement, your waist measurement may be a little different from what you’re used to. It’s not your jeans size. A true waist measurement needs to be taken at the smallest part of your waist. This could be at your belly button  or even a few inches above it. Hold the tape measure snugly, but not too tightly, to find your natural waistline.Hips.  Many models incorrectly measure around their hipbones, resulting in a much smaller hip measurement. Instead, standing with your feet together, measure around the fullest part of your hips and bum. This is the hip measurement agencies are looking for.   Required Measurements forMaleModels Height.  In bare feet, stand tall and straight with your back against a wall. Have someone run a ruler or something that can be  placed on the tallest part of your head straight back to the wall. Mark the wall where the ruler touches.  Measure the distance from the floor to the mark on the wall.Neck.  Place the tape measure around your lower neck, just below your Adam’s apple. Tighten the tape, then loosen it off a bit by slipping two fingers between the tape and your neck. Round up to the next half-inch.   Chest.  Wrap the tape measure under your armpits, around the fullest part of your chest. Make sure the tape is snug, but not so tight that you can’t breathe normally. That’s your chest measurement.  Waist. A true waist measurement needs to be taken at the smallest part of your waist. This could be at your belly button  or even a few inches above it. Hold the tape snugly, but not too tightly, to find your natural waistline- thats your true measurement.Sleeve.  First, place your hand on your hip. Then, starting the tape measure at the center point where your neck meets your shoulders, measure down along your arm and to your wrist. Stop measuring right where the wrist meets the palm of your hand. Jacket size.  You may have seen jacket sizes written as 40 Regular or 38 Long. The number refers to your chest size, and the “Regular” or “Long” refers to the length of the jacket. In general, your height determines the length you’ll need. Regular sizes are for men roughly between 58 and 511 and Long sizes are for men over 6 feet.

America lags behind Uganda and Bangladesh for women who own businesses

America lags behind Uganda and Bangladesh for women who own businesses America lags behind Uganda and Bangladesh for women who own businesses A new report on female entrepreneurship around the world shows countries like Uganda and Bangladesh producing higher rates of women business owners than the United States.Mastercard released the Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs 2017 just ahead of International Women’s Day. The report highlighted how women are faring in business across the globe. The index  used “12 indicators and 25 sub-indicators”  to examine 54 economies, which reportedly make up 78.6% of working women internationally.“Entrepreneurship” was defined broadly: “any attempt at new business or new venture creation, which may include, but not limited to self-employment, creation of a new business organization, or expansion of an existing business.”Based on the findings, the nature of a woman’s involvement in business may depend on where she is: her location can affect both her successes and challenges. The United States ranks 10th in business ownership for women  The country with the highest percenta ge of female business owners is Uganda, at 35%,  followed by Botswana, New Zealand, Russia with 33%, Australia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, China and Spain. The United States ranks after Spain, with around 31% of all business owners being women. (Which means, of course, that 69% of American business owners are men.)Poor working conditions don’t stop women from being business ownersTwo lower- and lower-middle income countries emerged as places with some of the highest percentages of women business owners overall, even though they reportedly didn’t have the best working environments or financial systems. If you guessed Uganda and Bangladesh, you’re right.Uganda had the highest percentage of women business owners, at 34.8%, which, the index  says, is “suggesting that women are as likely as men to start a business activity, and have started one for a maximum of three and a half years. They have also been active over the past 12 months seeking to borrow or set aside funds to set up a bu siness.”Apparently, there is also a “healthy” amount of “social acceptance” of women entrepreneurs. The country was, however, classified as low income. But this hasn’t come without its challenges. The index found that “women entrepreneurs at the micro level” in Uganda don’t have much  â€œaccess to financial services” or financing because many don’t have credit history, so they can’t take out loans.Another nation - classified as “lower middle income” - is in a similar situation.Bangladesh also had a  high percentage of women business owners, at 32%, according to the index, but women in business face certain obstacles there: among them, “very little acceptance and encouragement from society,” which hinders women from getting many leadership roles. But there’s good news: change is coming. The “the unique traits of being very high risk takers and having undeniably outstanding resilience to hardships and natural calamities is helping to drive the entrepr eneurship landscape (and high women business ownership representation) in this market,” the index said.Where women are winning in business, and have high supportWomen entrepreneurs tended to do best in specific places.Five of the top 10 markets with the highest overall index scores, according to Mastercard, are: New Zealand (74.4), Canada (72.4), the United States (69.9), Sweden (69.6) and Singapore (69.5),  according to the index.Women thrive in these places because they  tend to have healthy, small- and medium-sized “business communities,” they can conduct business relatively smoothly, and their governments function at a high standard, as detailed in a press release. These conditions have contributed to women’s success in the working world, but structural problems still hold women back in business, a Mastercard executive said.“The prevalence of ambitious, resourceful women should be regarded as a prime business opportunity. As society addresses existing cultural bias, we will do our part to help create those conditions that will strengthen and fuel the foundation for personal and economic growth,” said Mastercard Chief Financial Officer Martina Hund-Mejean in a  statement. What this means for businessWomen around the world are benefitting from entrepreneurship, but even in 2017, it may feel like just the beginning.“By increasing access to critical networks, our study shows that women are more able to recognize their full potential, achieve their goals and ultimately accelerate more inclusive growth. 5 recognizable signs that youre probably a workaholic

5 recognizable signs that you're probably a workaholic 5 recognizable signs that you're probably a workaholic We love a good  #boss. We take notes from them about how to maximize productivity (even on  Fridays), chase that  promotion  and negotiate a well-earned  pay raise. But there is a point when a fixation on work goes from professionally savvy to seriously harmful. Although workaholism is a word often thrown around flippantly, the very real phenomenon can hinder interpersonal relationships, affect mental and physical health, and ultimately reveal a deeper internal trial.Psychotherapist for  ParentingPod  and  Nobel Coaching and Tutoring  Ana Jovanovic explains some of the indicators of workaholism, why they manifest and, most importantly, how to remediate the behavior.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!1. A workaholic feels uneasy and anxious when not workingDespite oftentimes disliking their jobs, workaholics find that the actual act of working gives them a sense of comfort, str ucture, and meaning, which results in feelings of guilt, restlessness, and helplessness when not working, according to Jovanovic. “Without a daily list of tasks to handle, a workaholic might feel as if they are wasting time or living without a purpose,” she says. Even though they don’t have much of it, workaholics rarely allow themselves to enjoy free time.2. A workaholic always makes work the top priorityIs it the holidays? Doesn’t matter. Family dinner tonight? Forget it. Are they sick? Who cares? “A workaholic puts work above everything else,” Jovanovic explains. “For them, working might be very hard, but not working is even harder.” She especially stresses that their health often falls to the wayside in the name of work. And this skewed perspective on priorities can ultimately affect their opinions of others. “They devalue personal priorities and think less of people who put personal priorities before work,” Jovanovic says. Furthermore, workaholics are less l ikely to spend time connecting with other people at all - inside the workplace and out.3. A workaholic leaves little to no time for other aspects of life“Free time” isn’t all that free for workaholics. They constantly make themselves accessible to coworkers and are ready to go right back to work if necessary. According to Jovanovic, many workaholics actually lead in a manner that ensures they be constantly needed. “Workaholics do not invest in helping their team be resilient while they are gone,” Jovanovic states. “They create systems in which they are needed - they micromanage, delegate poorly, and do not rely on their team members.” And with all their off time strategically filled with office goings-on, they are then unable to set time aside for family, friends, hobbies or themselves.4. A workaholic doesn’t own the problemAs with most addicts, most actual workaholics won’t claim to be workaholics, rather they divert the blame to circumstances such as needing a promotion, lazy coworkers, or naturally having too much to do. The reason for this addiction to work, Jovanovic confirms, is a pretty dark one. “Working long hours is a socially approved way of suppressing other acute problems in life,” Jovanovic says. “This is why the hardest step of all is admitting to yourself that work is your distraction from living.”5. A workaholic is not happyPeople who are passionate about their work and funnel a lot of energy into what they do are not workaholics. The reason for this, Jovanovic says, is because workaholics are unhappy. “They feel a compulsive need to work excessively,” Jovanovic says. “They do not commit to it for the fun of it, but for the purpose of tranquilizing the negative emotions that come from not working.” So in an effort to circumvent the anxiety that comes from not working, they busy themselves in work - but to the point of numbness.Although workaholism can be all-consuming, Jovanovic assures us there are some wa ys to address the unhealthy behavior. She recommends consulting people in your office for feedback about your workplace habits and their effects on others, planning activities with people you care about right after work to ensure you actually sign off at the end of the workday, and reconnecting with your emotions (those things you’ve been perhaps unintentionally avoiding via work) by reading books, listening to music, or anything else that prompts inspiration and introspection. And, of course, there’s always professional help. How have you taken a step back from the office? Interviewing Tips for Five Different Types of Hiring Managers

Interviewing Tips for Five Different Types of Hiring Managers Interviewing Tips for Five Different Types of Hiring Managers Did you land an interview? Congratulations, you’re halfway to the promise of a new job! You’re armed with interviewing tips and feel fully prepared as you walk in the door. But then you encounter an interviewer who completely throws you off. He’s either totally unprepared (e.g., lost your resume) or he makes you feel really awkward (e.g., long periods of silence). Well, sometimes bad things happen to good interviewees. Regardless of how much you practice, you never know what to expect when you meet the hiring manager. To help you stay in control, here are interviewing tips to adjust to five types of common interviewers: 1. The bumbler. Bumblers have virtually no idea how to conduct an effective job interview. They know they need to hire someone, but they haven’t gotten around to formulating specific hiring criteria or asking probing interview questions. They tend to base their impressions of you on factors that have almost nothing to do with what it takes to do the job. Advice: Bumblers are often easy to impress, but you have to lead them. When dealing with a bumbler, stay in command of your own story and keep reiterating your strengths. 2. The chatterbox. Chatterboxes like to talk. And talk. And talk. They talk about themselves, the company, their kids, their workout regimen, their pets, their hobbies … If you’re lucky, they’ll get around to the specifics of the job. They talk so much, in fact, and so incessantly that if you’re not careful, you may never get a chance to present your case. Advice: Pick your spots to dart in and out of the interviewer’s conversation, making short (but self-serving) comments that play off whatever the chatterbox is chattering about. One of the most overlooked interviewing tips is to ask your own questions. Pose pointed questions specific to the job or company, and redirect the chatterbox back to those topics if the rambling resumes. 3. The poker face. Poker-faced interviewers can make your skin crawl. They sit there, sphinx-like, as you talk about yourself and your qualifications. They don’t nod. They don’t smile. Nothing seems to faze or impress them.   Advice: When it comes to interviewing tips for dealing with this type of hiring manager, the key is to stay calm. Avoid trying too hard evoke a response. Turning up the heat or your own enthusiasm isn’t likely to make a difference with truly stoic interviewers. You’re probably making an impression: It’s simply not registering on the interviewer’s face. 4. The gamesperson. Gamespeople view the job interview as a game of cat and mouse. Their main goal is finding ways to trip you up. Sometimes they are subtle and harmless; other times they can be mean-spirited, like ignoring you when you walk in the door as a “test” to see how assertive you are.   Advice: If you feel like you’re being tested, determine which reaction would best serve your own interests. If the interviewer is simply rude, you need to ask yourself if you want to work for this person or company. One of the best interviewing tips is to remain cool and professional at all times, but set boundaries if any situation is making you uncomfortable. 5. The late interviewer. It’s unreasonable to expect every interview to start exactly on time. But if the interviewer is running 20 or 30 minutes late, and you haven’t been given an apology or explanation, consider rescheduling. This approach might serve you better if you suspect the interviewer is under pressure or time constraints.   Advice: Be careful to conceal whatever impatience you may be feeling. If you suggest rescheduling the interview, convey that you understand that unexpected events frequently happen in business and that you would be happy to return when things are less hectic.   The above examples and interviewing tips are courtesy of Job Hunting for Dummies, 2nd Edition (John Wiley Sons). We’d like to read your stories about the types of interviewers you’ve encountered. Add them in the comments section below.
